Chapter 13
An hour later he was grabbing up his bag to leave. He handed Camille a Pop-Tart since they never got around to lunch. Theyâd decided to spend the extra time in bed. He picked up their gifts before he pulled the door shut.
âWeâll put these under the tree at home.â He winked.
She paused on the steps, looking up at him.
âYou know I love you too,â she said. Heâd hoped. Heâd guessed, but hearing the words on her lips made it real. He kissed her for a long moment until his phone chimed with a text from Gia, asking him where the hell he was.
He was in heaven.
Gia was ecstatic when she found out Camille was coming with them.
âYay! I was hoping youâd get off your ass and ask her! Nothing like waiting until the last minute.â
âLook! I had to work up to it, okay? Itâs not every day I tell someone I love them.â He winked at Camille as Gia stopped in the middle of zipping her bag.
She turned to him slowly. Then a smile started on just one side. âOh. My. God.â She grabbed him in a hug. âI knew you werenât emotionally stunted. I knew you had it in you. Wow! This is huge.â
âItâs not huge. Settle down. And you donât need to go screaming to Mom the minute we walk in the door.â He frowned as she released him to attack Camille with hugs too.
âWe so shouldnât have told you,â Camille said while giggling. She was so beautiful, his heart seized with love all over again.
âDid you tell her about the otherââ Gia started.
âIâve revealed enough secrets for now. Shut up,â he cut her off. He wasnât ready to delve into that issue yet. Maybe when they had plenty of time to discuss it.
âWhat? What else donât I know?â Camille whined.
âNothing. You know my sister has a big mouth.â He glared at Gia. âThatâs all there is.â He took her bag and tried to regain the happiness heâd felt a moment ago. He changed the subject. âReady to go?â He knew he needed to tell her, but how could he? He couldnât even handle it himself.
The ride to Houston was fun. They all sang along with the radio, trying to outdo each other.
Will rested his hand on Camilleâs leg except when he was shifting gears. The contact helped keep him focused on being happy, and letting the future figure itself out.
Camille seemed at ease, at least until they were inside the city limits. Then she started biting her thumbnail.
âRelax,â he whispered as they pulled into the driveway. He grew up in this huge house on a residential street. It was white with black shutters and huge white columns lining the front. It was home to him, and he hoped Camille would feel at home too.
Except she looked ill as he pulled his ratty truck in front of the third garage door.
âCam, itâs going to be fine. Theyâre not going to bite.â
âWhat if they donât like me?â she asked.
